Communication Server Concept & Setup

1. Concept

MyIVO Communication Servers routes network traffic and secures data communication among MyIVO clients and MyIVO servers over the internet.

A Communication Server is launched along with each new MyIVO server instance. Those Communication Servers that can be directly connected from the internet are made available to serve members in the MyIVO service network.

As more users join the MyIVO service network, more Communication Servers are made available to the members, thus provide higher availability, faster service, and better performance. For example, you may be in a situation that your remote computer can not be reached from internet due to certain network restrictions, however, by connecting via Communication Server from the MyIVO service network, you can still gain remote access to your computer.

Connecting to a Communication Server

For each new MyIVO client and server connection, an available Communication Server is designated from one of the member's computers in the MyIVO service network. The selection criteria is based on:

  • Distance
  • Connectivity, and
  • Optimal communication bandwidth.

Running MyIVO Server and Communication Server on the same computer

Whenever possible, MyIVO server connects to the Communication Server running on the same computer for optimal communication.

When MyIVO Server detects that it can not route traffic via the Communication Server running on the same computer, it connects to an available Communication Server from the MyIVO service network.

2. Benefits of running MyIVO Server and Communication Server on the same computer
  1. The communication path is optimal.
  2. Fully utilize the ISP's bandwidth.
Please see the following Setup section on setting up the Communication Server.

3. Communication Server port & status

By default, MyIVO uses port 443 (SSL port) for communication. The user may select a different port - right click on "MyIVO" icon in the system tray area, select "Open MyIVO Manager". Under "MyIVO Manager" -> "Communication Server" panel, you can set Communication Server port and check status. If the Communication Server is already running, the status will display "Status: Running and Serving". The network settings of your computer is also displayed for your reference.

4. Setup

Although you do not need to start a local Communication Server to use MyIVO. Configuring and running a local Communication Server provide you the best performance. Please follow the procedures below to setup your local Communication Server.

When your computer is directly connected to the internet

  • If you do not have a firewall running on your computer, the Communication Server will join the MyIVO service network automatically without any special configuration.
  • If your firewall is configured to block traffic used by MyIVO (i.e. Windows XP SP2 firewall), you need to configure it so that if will not block the Communication Server port (and will not block MyIVO Server process myivosrv.exe).
When your computer is behind a router

You need to configure your router to forward incoming request from internet on Communication Server port to your computer. Check your router's manual and look for key words: "Port Forwarding" or "Virtual Server".

In this case, it'd be better to configure your computer to use a static IP. Otherwise, if the IP changed dynamically, you may have to change the corresponding settings on your router accordingly.
